Starlink satellite internet costs over PHP 5K per month

Elon Musk's SpaceX and its low-orbit satellite technology, Starlink, will release in the Philippines in December 2022.

Customers must purchase the router kit, which costs USD 599 (roughly PHP 33K) and pay the monthly subscription fee of USD 99 (around PHP 5K) to use the unlimited internet service.

"That is a one-time equipment purchase," said Starlink representative Rebecca Hunter. "The service is USD 99 per month, and there are no data caps."

"This [Starlink dish] can be placed on the rooftop so long as it has clear sky, you will be able to get a satellite signal," said Department of Information and Communications (DICT) Secretary Ivan John Uy.

Both the satellite dish and router are completely mobile, which can be set up as easy as "plug-and-play."

Hunter said Starlink could be used in extreme weather conditions such as high heat.

Meanwhile, Uy said the government plans to fund the installation of the technology in rural areas, especially in geographically-isolated and disadvantaged areas, which will be called "BroadBand ng Masa" (people's broadband).

While the BroadBand ng Masa project has yet to be funded under the 2023 budget, the remaining budget for the "Free WiFi Program" under the previous administration will be used instead.

According to the NTC, the Starlink service provides low-latency, high-speed satellite internet with download speeds between 100 megabits per second (Mbps) and 200 Mbps.

Using advanced satellites in a low orbit, NTC said that Starlink would enable video calls, online gaming, streaming, and other high-data internet activities not previously possible with satellite internet.

In May 2022, Starlink Internet Services Philippines Inc. secured the approval of the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) as a value-added service (VAS) provider.

Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) also announced earlier that the Philippines would be the first country in Southeast Asia (SEA) to take advantage of the Starlink technology.
