List of Minecraft Error Codes and How to Fix Them

Here are some error codes you may encounter in Minecraft, along with their corresponding solutions.

Multiplayer Errors

These are issues you will only encounter when you're online or trying to log in/out of a server.

Connection refused: connect
  • To solve this error, confirm if you've entered the correct server address. Restart the server and check for errors.

Creeper
  • Ensure that your connection is stable and that it is properly configured.

Crossbow
  • Before attempting again, try restarting the game and/or letting it sit idle for a few minutes.

Drowned
  • Fully close Minecraft, reset your device and attempt to log in again.

End of stream
  • Close and relaunch Minecraft and attempt to log in again.
  • Try to restart the server (if you have access to the server's console).
  • Check that the server and your client have a clear connection.

Failed to login: Bad Login
  • To fix this error, confirm that you're running the right version of Minecraft for the server you want to connect to.
  • Check your network connection and your ping (delay) time. Your client may be disconnected because the network's response time is too slow.

Failed to login: invalid IP
  • Try to log in again once validation services have resumed normal operation.
  • Monitor the server status of Minecraft via the Mojang Status Twitter account.

Failed to login: The authentication servers are currently down for maintenance
  • Try to access the game again later when the authentication servers return to normal.
  • Check your firewall to ensure the servers are not blocked.
  • Set the server.properties to online-mode=false. This disables authentication for the server. Anyone can log in using any username in this mode.
  • Monitor the Minecraft server status via the Mojang Status Twitter account.

Ghast
  • On Windows and Xbox platforms, try signing out of Xbox Live and back in again.
  • On the Switch console, try the "Clear Account Credentials" button in Settings > Profile.

Glowstone
  • Try restarting Minecraft or waiting for the login server problem to be resolved before trying again.

Haybale
  • Verify that the Xbox app is up-to-date, then sign out and sign back in.

Internal Exception: io.netty.handler.timeout.ReadTimeoutException
  • Check your internet connection to ensure that no packets have been dropped.
  • Ensure that your computer has sufficient speed to run the game. On a multiplayer server, the game requires more processing power than on a single player.
  • Close any programs that may be hogging your bandwidth.

java.io.IOException: Server returned HTTP response code: 503
  • Check the Mojang Status Twitter handle to find out if there are planned server outages (maintenance, website updates, etc.).
  • Try to log in again when the Minecraft authentication servers return to normal operation.
  • If the issue persists and there have been no reported outages, explain the situation to the server owner/administrator or a known server operator (OP).

java.net.SocketException: Connection reset
  • Try to reconnect to the server after waiting a few minutes.
  • Confirm if the connection to the server is normal. Try to contact the server owner/administrator or a known OP and explain the situation.

Marketplace Errors (L-, D-, S- or P-)
  • You can only wait for the server to fix the issue and try again later.
  • Update your Minecraft client to the same version as the server.

  • To fix this, update your Minecraft client to the same version as the server.

Outdated server!
  • In the Minecraft Launcher, change the version to the one utilized by the server using the Profile Editor.

Piglin
  • Force close the game and restart it.

Pufferfish
  • Fully close Minecraft, reset your device and try to log in again.

This server responded with an invalid server key
  • Attempt logging in again.

Took too long to log in
  • Confirm that your internet connection is operational and that there is no connection loss.
  • Check the Mojang Status Twitter handle to see if there is scheduled maintenance.
  • Try again a few minutes later.

User Not Premium
  • Confirm your Minecraft client is a paid version.

You are not whitelisted on this server
  • To solve this, contact the server owner/administrator or a known OP. Request the admin to add you to the list of people who want to connect to the server.

Crashes

These issues can occur at any point while playing Minecraft.

Failed to check session lock, aborting
  • Delete the "session.lock" file in the world save folder (contact an administrator if you aren't one and explain the situation).

java.lang.NullPointerException
  • Find the Java crash log (commonly a file named hs_err_pid...txt located on your desktop) and check if you can find the error cited in there in one of the answers here.
  • A typical error is EXCEPTION_ACCESS_VIOLATION, along with a problematic frame. Find the answers for that frame.
  • Rename the ~/.minecraft directory to something else so Minecraft can't find it, then launch Minecraft again and start a new game. This will generate a new ~/.minecraft directory. Close Minecraft. Then, copy the saved games from the renamed ~/.minecraft/saves directory to the new one.

Runtime Errors

These are errors with how the game interprets the code while it is running. These may be the result of code changes or problems with the way your game or world is saved.

com.google.gson.JsonSyntaxException or com.google.gson.stream.MalformedJsonException
  • To solve this error, restore your Minecraft save to a previous backup and delete any mods that you didn't have before this issue.

  • Close any unused programs (to free up memory).
  • Reduce the number of Minecraft mods.
  • Upgrade to the 64-bit version of Java software (requires a 64-bit computer).

RuntimeException: No OpenGL context found in the current thread. or org.lwjgl.LWJGLException: Pixel format not accelerated
