Pattachitra is a common term for traditional, cloth-based scroll painting, based in the eastern Indian states of Odisha and West Bengal. In Sanskrit, Patta  means cloth and chitra means picture . 

One of the ancient artwork of Odisha Pattachitra is originally created for rituals use and as souvenirs for Pilgrims to Puri, as well as other temples of Odisha while Bengali Pattachitras are originally present as a visual device during the performance of a song.  

Technique  

The studio of patta Painting is the home of the chitrakars (painter) . woman members of family make the glue, the canvas, fill the colors and the male members draws the initial line and gives the final finishing.  

The canvas is prepared by coating the clothing with a mixture of chalk and gum made from tamarind seeds, after rubbing it with two different stones and then dried. Which gives a leathery finish on which the vegetable, earth and stone colors are painted.  

Odisha Pattachitra

Origin of Odisha Pattachitra  

A traditional art which dates back to 5 BC, the pattachitra painting were like the old murals of Odisha more in places of puri, konark, and Bhubanishwar region. Pattachitra purses to live in India’s first heritage village. 

The painting is having three types, based on its medium, painting on cloth, painting on walls and palm leaf engraving. All these painting were more or less similar.  

If the savara  origin of Jagannath is created, the dated to an olden period. These painting were replaced of statue for worship on the days when the temple doors were shut for the ritual bath.

The theme of Odia painting centers round the Jagannath and Vaishnave persuasion. Some of the other theme are chiefly on Lord Radha Krishna, different Vegas of shri Jagannath, Balabhadra and Subhadra temple activities, Vishnu incarnation, Navagunjara, Ramayana and Mahabharata stories.
