Smart grabs 3rd 'Best in Test' award from global firm umlaut

PLDT's wireless arm Smart has received its third consecutive "Best in Test" award from global benchmark company umlaut, which is part of Accenture.

Germany-based umlaut also cited the telco for having the best ratings on upload speeds, download speeds, and latency experience. This is a testament to Smart's ongoing efforts to continuously strengthen its network and provide enhanced mobile services.

According to umlaut, Smart recorded an overall score of 801 out of a peak of 1,000 points. Moreover, the report, which included 985 million samples collected from May 2022 to October 2022, showed Smart led in terms of internet browsing, mobile wireless voice, mobile video and gaming and over-the-top (OTT) messaging performances.

Smart's score accomplishments include voice metrics, such as call set-up times and voice call quality; data metrics, such as web browsing, upload and download speeds, and consistently good and reliable throughput across the Philippines; and crowdsourced elements to evaluate coverage quality and session reliability.

Smart had deployed 77,200 base stations as of the end of September, including 7,300 5G base stations and about 40,000 4G/LTE base stations. Smart's 3G, LTE, and 5G networks cover 97% of the population.

The most extensive in the country, PLDT's fiber infrastructure supports Smart's mobile network. PLDT has expanded its fiber footprint to approximately 1,091,000 kilometers as of the end of September, including over 231,000 kilometers of international fiber and nearly 860,000 kilometers of domestic fiber.

Since 2019, Smart has been honored with the "Best in Test" distinction. In that year, PLDT's wireless division was recognized as having the most extensive 4G/LTE coverage and the fastest upload and download speeds.

In 2021, in addition to other citations, when conferring the "Best in Test" award, umlaut noted Smart's superior and progressively improving network despite the impact of COVID-19, unlike its competitor.

Smart was also cited by umlaut for consistently demonstrating higher throughput rates than its competitor and for delivering the best network performance during the 30th Southeast Asian (SEA) Games in December 2019.

More than 200 mobile networks in over 120 countries are supported by umlaut.
