Zero Harm in Comms: Riot, Ubisoft collab to combat toxicity
Riot Games and Ubisoft have announced the "Zero Harm in Comms" research project, a technological collaboration aimed at extending the reach of their artificial intelligence-based solutions to prevent harmful player interactions.
Zero Harm in Comms
This research initiative aims to develop a cross-industry shared database and labeling ecosystem that collects in-game data to better train AI-based preemptive moderation tools to detect and mitigate disruptive behavior.
Ubisoft and Riot Games, both active members of the Fair Play Alliance, firmly believe that the creation of safe and meaningful online gaming experiences can only be achieved through collective action and knowledge sharing. Consequently, this initiative is a continuation of the larger journey undertaken by both companies to create gaming structures that foster more rewarding social experiences and avoid harmful interactions.
Through the "Zero Harm in Comms" research project, Ubisoft and Riot are exploring how to lay the technological foundations for future industry collaboration, as well as developing a framework to ensure the initiative's ethics and privacy. Due to Riot Games' highly competitive games and Ubisoft's incredibly diverse portfolio, the resulting database should encompass every type of player and in-game behavior in order to train Riot Games' and Ubisoft's AI systems more effectively.
"Disruptive behavior isn't a problem that is unique to games—every company that has an online social platform is working to address this challenging space," said Riot's technology research head Wesley Kerr. "That is why we're committed to working with industry partners like Ubisoft who believe in creating safe communities and fostering positive experiences in online spaces."
"At Ubisoft, we have been working on concrete measures to ensure safe and enjoyable experiences, but we believe that, by coming together as an industry, we will be able to tackle this issue more effectively." said Ubisoft La Forge executive director Yves Jacquier. "Through this technological partnership with Riot Games, we are exploring how to better prevent in-game toxicity as designers of these environments with a direct link to our communities."

Still, in its early stage, the "Zero Harm in Comms" research project is the initial phase of an ambitious cross-industry initiative that will eventually benefit the entire player community. As part of the initial research exploration, Ubisoft and Riot are committed to sharing the initial phase of the experiment's findings with the entire industry in 2019, regardless of the outcome.
