Safeguard your Personal Accounts (part-2)
Mishandling your personal accounts can result in a lot of hassle and headaches. Even worse, if you make a big enough mistake, you could have legal ramifications to deal with as well.
With that in mind, here are 10 ways to avoid mishandling your personal accounts and making mistakes that you’ll have to live with later on down the road.
1) Update Your Software and Browser Settings Regularly:
By staying up-to-date with your software and browser settings, you reduce the chances of something going wrong.
Have a strategy in place so that when the unexpected happens you know what steps to take.
2) Don’t give out information when requested in an email or text:
Hackers are constantly trying to crack popular email accounts, and Gmail is one of the most coveted targets.
Luckily, there are several simple ways to protect your Gmail account from being hacked. First, be sure to use two-factor authentication on all your accounts that support it.
This means that when you log in from a new device or location, you’ll have to enter an additional password that only you know. Second, use strong passwords for your accounts and services and update them often.
3) Avoid Public Wi-Fi Networks (like in cafes, airports, etc.)
Public Wi-Fi networks are rife with all sorts of security risks and should be avoided at all costs. In general, the most secure way to use your email is on a private, encrypted connection.
Public networks often leave you open to hijacking, where cybercriminals may pose as free WiFi points and redirect you onto a scam website or attempt to install malware onto your computer.
4) Monitor Access Permissions Regularly:
One of the best ways to stay safe with your email is to monitor access permissions regularly.
While you can adjust access permissions at any time, you should set up guidelines for when and how often to do so and keep track of those changes.
Give your recipients explicit permission before adding them as an email contact or a contact on Google+, YouTube, and LinkedIn.
Also, keep an eye out for suspicious emails and remove unknown senders from your list.
5) Change passwords often:
No matter how well you think you know your accounts, it's always a good idea to change your passwords often.
That way, if someone does manage to get ahold of your information, they won't be able to access anything for very long. Here are a few tips for changing your passwords.
6) Use two-factor authentication:
Two-factor authentication is an important security measure that can help protect your accounts from being hacked.
By using a two-factor authentication system, you are adding an extra layer of security to your account.
This means that even if someone knows your password, they will not be able to access your account unless they also have access to your second factor of authentication.
