Qualcomm Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 chipset announced
Qualcomm, during the Snapdragon Summit 2022, announced its latest flagship smartphone processor, the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. The new chipset has been launched as a successor to the 8 Gen 1 and 8+ Gen 1.
This new octa-core chip is known as the SM8550-AB and is manufactured using a 4nm process node. The new Kryo CPU trio offers up to 35 percent greater performance and up to 40 percent greater efficiency. It features 1x 3.19GHz Cortex-X3 Kryo Prime core, 2x 2.8GHz Cortex A715 Performance cores, 2x 2.8GHz Cortex A710 Performance cores, and 3x 2.0GHz Kryo Efficiency cores.
The SD 8 Gen 2 supports new, more efficient memory technologies. For the RAM, it supports LPDDR5X at speeds up to 4,200 MHz (from LPDDR5 at 3,200 MHz). Meanwhile, for storage, it can utilize the new UFS 4.0 (from UFS 3.1).
The new Adreno GPU promises up to 25 percent greater performance and up to 45 percent greater power efficiency. It also adds hardware-accelerated ray tracing support to the Snapdragon platform. Additionally, this is the first GPU to support Vulkan 1.3 (along with OpenGL ES 3.2). It also features Snapdragon Shadow Denoiser and Adreno Frame Motion Engine.
It also has display support for up to 4K 60fps or QHD at 144Hz, 10-bit colors, HDR10+, HDR vivid, and Dolby Vision.
For AI, it features a new HexaGon DSP, AI Engine, and Qualcomm Sensing Hub with Dual AI processors, which enables AI performance that is up to 435 percent faster.
Regarding cameras, it utilizes a Triple 18-bit Spectra ISP with up to 200MP photo capture, 108MP single camera, 64MP + 36MP dual camera setup, up to 36MP triple-camera module, 8K HDR at 60 fps, and 720p at 960fps slow-motion. Further, the American mobile chipmaker boasts that Sony image sensors' Digital Overlap HDR (DOL-HDR) and Samsung's 200-megapixel HP3 are optimized for the new Snapdragon chipset.
According to the semiconductor company, Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 connects using the Snapdragon X70 5G Modem, which supports speeds of up to 10 Gbps Downlink and 3.5 Gbps Uplink. This SoC also supports 8 mmWave channels with 2x2 MIMO and sub-6GHz channels with 4x4 MIMO.
Additionally, it supports up to WiFi 7, Bluetooth 5.3 with aptX Lossless, Dual Frequency GNSS, and Qualcomm Quick Charge 5.
Qualcomm said that Android makers, including Asus Republic of Gamers (ROG), Honor, iQOO, Motorola, nubia, OnePlus, Oppo, Red Magic, Redmi, Sharp, Sony, vivo, Xiaomi, Meizu and ZTE, will adopt the Snapdragon 8 Gen 2 processor, with commercial devices expected by the end of 2022.
