Globe to provide easy, secure, inclusive SIM registration system

Globe Telecom has announced that it began preparations to ensure a credible and customer-friendly rollout of the SIM Registration Act, a monumental task that requires 87.4 million consumers to register their SIM cards within six (6) months.

As required by law, the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) began discussions with relevant government agencies and numerous stakeholders, including telecommunications companies, last October 10 in order to draft the law's implementing rules and regulations (IRR).

According to Globe, they will begin the registration of all existing SIM card users, including physical SIM cards and eSIMs on mobile devices, once the IRR is approved and published.

Globe Group president and CEO Ernest Cu said that they plan for their SIM registration process "to be as seamless and painless" to their customers as possible. He also added that their goal is "to stay true to the spirit of the law in carrying out its provisions, while ensuring that the conduct of SIM registration will be secure, inclusive and convenient" for their subscribers.

Globe's SIM registration platform is being designed using worldwide best practices. It is also utilizing its array of best-in-class digital technologies to provide a registration method that is both easy and secure.

Cu added that they would like to assure their customers that "their data will be protected even as we give them a hassle-free registration process."

The Philippines' SIM Registration Act is intended to combat rising cybercrime, such as the development of smishing and other forms of scam and spam messaging made possible by the anonymity of prepaid SIMs.

Globe has taken many measures to combat these nuisance messages, including proactive blocking, threat intelligence collaborations with financial institutions, a consumer reporting tool, and an education and awareness campaign to assist customers in protecting themselves.

From January to September of 2022, Globe deactivated 16,215 mobile phone numbers and banned 19,343 others for their involvement in scams and spam texting. During the same time period, it prevented a total of 1.3 billion spam and scam messages.

Rep. Luis Raymund Villafuerte of the 2nd District of Camarines Sur recently urged government agencies like the NTC and the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) not to rush the drafting of the IRR for the SIM Registration Act, stating that they should collaborate closely with telcos to ensure a secure and future-proof registration system.
