How to Cope With Exam Stress

It’s natural to feel stressed during the exam season but allowing that anxious feeling to consume your mind and body will do you no good. In fact, being overly stressed can actually deter your chances of success.

By feeling worked up, you will send your body into fight or flight mode, and with too much adrenaline and cortisone flying to your brain, you will wind up feeling short of breath, tight-chested and sick.

The first way to overcome this sensation is by monitoring your breathing.

Take a big breath in through your nose for five seconds and then slowly exhale through your mouth.

By repeating this for a few minutes, you will moderate your breathing and slow down your heart rate, which will naturally help you to relax!

Another way to conquer that negative feeling is through exercise.

When engaging in regular physical activity, our bodies release a ‘feel-good’ hormone which instantly lifts our mood, releases unnecessary tension and helps us relax.

So, if you’re feeling stressed, why not go for a quick jog around the block or attend a local Zumba class?

The third tip to help you beat the stress is to not overstudy.

Many students assume that they should get as many study sessions in as possible, but according to experts, this can have a negative effect.

It can lead to excess amounts of stress and tension in the body, and can even cause confusion due to the amount of information taken in over a short space of time.

When it comes to exam preparation, it’s ideal to identify what type of learner you are; by doing so, you can find the most effective way to study.
As there are four main learning groups, you’ll either be a visual, kinesthetic, reader or an auditory learner.

Once you’ve discovered what type of learner you are, you can create a study plan accordingly.

For example, if you’re a visual learner mapping out the information using graphs and diagrams would help.

As a kinesthetic learner, acting out the material or discussing it in a small group would help.

If you’re a reader, studying the material on your own would help, whereas auditory learners can benefit by recording themselves speaking and then playing it back.

Lastly, don’t forget to socialise and schedule some downtime during your exam period!

When revising, make sure you allocate some time to hang out with your friends and family or to go out and enjoy yourself.

You should also take some time to relax before bed; you could watch an episode of your favourite series, or even video call your bestie!

Now that you know how to beat the sweaty palms, racing heart and sleepless nights, you’ll be in a much better position to curb your stress for good!
