Description
This style of embroidery first started amongst the rural folk about 500 years ago. But with the passage of time this beautiful embroidery added in royal traffic. The reason is a specific style of flower designs. The flower petals kind of look like they have steps or levels. It has 3D effect and looks amazing.
Stitches used
The trellis stitch is used in kamal kadai for the flowers and leaves and also with the combination of other stitches.
A similar kind of thread work can be found in western embroidery world like the Tenerife Lace work. At some point of time, these two embroideries might be inspired each other, though it is not sure. Tenerife Lace's work uses the woven trellis stitch in complicated patterns, while kamal kadai stays Simple and humble in its use and form.
Making process
Frame and draw geometrical pattern on cloth, which are mostly like a square. Make visible points in each corner of the square. The points can depend upon the pattern as to how thick patterns are there in the design. Here, we will start with four petals, and the middle part of the pattern is pointed to have an idea Of how big the middle part is to be.
Start with the bottom of the petal. Bring the thread from the backside of the cloth and take it to the top of the petal, then bring it back to the bottom and then take it to the top again. This way all four corner points are covered and all we get is five straight lines.
Again, start with the bottom of the petal and weave into the four threads Like you braid your hair. Weave Through the petal first talk then the bottom then again top. Repeat this process with each corner and finish the kamal kadai embroidery.
For the middle part use a similar technique of threading as there is not much space to do kamal Embroidery. Take the thread up and down till the entire area is covered.
Variations
Over modern embroidery, kamal kadai technique is fun to use with a favorable foundation. It is possible to combine the weaving technique with other stitches. Few of the ideas are given here and the other is left to create your variation.
You can use long-tailed Daisy as the foundation, Use the tail of long-tailed Daisy as the foundation to weave the flower. Do not weave over the chains. Stitch the other pattern and it is done.
You can also use Pistil stitch as the foundation. Weave Pistil stitch in such a way that the knot of the stitch make the edge of the flower petals. Weave through the stitch at a time and finish the flower pattern.
You can use buttonhole wheel stitch as the foundation. make a buttonhole will in such a way that you will have enough space to weave petals equally. once the petals are done, we can have finished flower pattern.
Precautions
Make sure that the thread can complete one whole petal. The thread should not be too tight or too loose as it should be perfect. Thread should be pricked at the starting point and add the ending point. Recreation should be made that the straight stretch should not be pricked in between.
