Riot Games' Project L will be free to play, adds Illaoi as a fighter

Riot Games' upcoming League of Legends-inspired 2D fighting game with the codename "Project L" will be free to play and will include the League champion Illaoi, the Kraken Priestess, as one of its playable fighters, the game developer announced in a blog post. This is the first time since November 2021 that Riot Games has shared new information regarding the fighting game.

As per senior director and executive producer Tom Cannon, the team is completing work on the game's core mechanics and gameplay and is now shifting its focus to developing the game's champion roster and features pertaining to competitive play and social systems.

Moreover, the team is pushing its goal "to remove as many barriers as possible" for Project L by making it completely free-to-play (F2P). This includes a promise from the developers to be considerate regarding monetization upon launch.

"When it comes to monetization, we promise to be respectful of both your time and your wallet," said Cannon.

Riot also confirmed the next League champion coming to Project L is Illaoi. In this fighting game, the Kraken Priestess will be a "Big Body Juggernaut," having a "huge hurtbox, massive hits, and slower movement, with a simple-to-learn, hard-to-master kit," said game designer Caroline Montano.

Illaoi will join five League champions already confirmed for Project L: Ahri, Darius, Ekko, Jinx, and Katarina.

Riot Games doesn't reveal the release date for Project L yet. But the game company promises that the Project L team will provide another update "before the end of the year."

Project L is one of Riot Games' many expansions of the League of Legends universe, such as the famous Netflix show Arcane.
