Invigorate the pretty full applique work- phool patti ka kaam

The word phool means flowers and patti means a leaf, thus the motifs and patterns in the embroidery are nature-inspired. The embroidery can be spotted on a variety of Indian ethnic outfits from time to time. 

A traditional craft of applique and needlework style embroidery done by an artisan of Aligarh is known as phool Patti ka kaam. It is a type of patchwork with embroidery.

History 

A traditional embroidery style from north India is the aristocratic and one among them is phool patti ka kaam. The exquisite form of applique work is originated date back to mughal period. Begum of nawab adore the work.

The need of embellishment and hot summer weather in the reason for the invention of the excellent work. Aligarh district of north is the origin place of embroidery, this is the reason phool patti is kaam is  also called Aligarh work.

After the Jahangir's visit to Kashmir, the love towards the nature enhance more and this can be seen in the Aligarh work.

Making process

The first thing the fabric is cut to required length and width, it is shaped with the folds and where required sequences are added. The fabric is fixed on the fabric base with fusible technique or buy heming with the needle, then the fabric edges are given with straight stitches, and satin stitches to overlap the edges.

 the piece work of tissue fabric and referred to a choti Patti and badi patti as the fabric size and the other design is known as chota phool and bada phool.

The stem Stitch is done where ever the stem pattern of design is done on the fabric. some of applique works shamiana, canopies, chandowa which in few cases are also done with waste clothes.

Products

Innovation with applique work done on georgette, rubiya cloth,  crochet and more. phool patti ka kaam were used in many products and few are dupatta, stones, handkerchiefs, scarves, cushion covers, curtain, bed covers, tea cosy, saree, salwar kameez, Tshirt, and list is goes on.

Motifs

The human figures has not given the entry in the Aligarh work. The embroidery is purely nature based.

Many practitioners of which made this embroidery stitch together in simple pattern as of veins and trees.

Revival

The  Pathway to bring the art form into mainstream is not an easy task. 

the challenge to keep the handicraft alive are numerous.  Competitors from new styles of designs ensures the artist to work full time due to social bonds newer form of employment lure youth. These are the reasons why the embroidery is on the edge of extinct.
