With most of us just trying to get through the month and pay our bills, it can be hard to answer this question – especially if the role you’re applying for isn’t part of your long-term career goals.
So, to help you navigate through this question and offer a standout answer, we will guide you through it with an example scenario.
1. Be Honest
As the age old saying goes “honesty is the best policy” – and this is especially true when it comes to answering interview questions.
A good answer will align your long-term goals to the role that you’re applying for.
Here’s a good example answer:
"Where do you see yourself in the next five years?""In the next five years, I hope to have learned a lot in this field and have the responsibility to manage my own team of people. In addition, I’d like to be working for a company whose goals align with my own".
2. Highlight Your Career Goals
As we discussed, there’s no need to commit to the company that are hiring for the long run.
Instead, allow room for that to be implied within your answer by focussing on your career goals.
3. Be Enthusiastic
It’s important to show your passion and enthusiasm when answering the question –
the hiring manager wants to see that you’re dedicated to your work and that you have goals that you want to reach.
Likewise, if the hiring manager is enthusiastic about your answer, you know you’d be a good match.
If not, it may be best to continue exploring your options.
4. Show Your Eagerness to Learn and Improve
No matter what career level you’re at, you should continue learning and improving on a daily basis.
It’s important to get this message across during your interview.
You can explain that you don’t want to remain stagnant and that in the next five years you are hoping to continue improving as your career progresses.
Here is a good example answer:
"Where do I see myself in five years? Hopefully better than I am now.I know this industry is constantly evolving, and there is a lot to learn.Something new has been invented, introduced or innovated in the last second, and it’ll probably be integral to your company. It’s my job to fully understand it and somehow ensure it can help you and others grow".
So, now you know how to answer this question, you can impress the hiring manager with your experience!
