Chest cancer information and treatment
Chest cancer is the most common type of cancer in men and women. About 1 out of 8 people will develop this disease at some point in their lives, although it is rare for someone to be diagnosed with it before age 50. The lifetime risk for developing chest cancer ranges from about 1% to 2%.The five-year survival rate for patients who survive early stage (1 or 2 tumors) breast cancers is around 95%, but the 5-year survival rate drops significantly after stage IV (metastatic).
Chest cancer is the most common type of cancer in both men and women in the United States. It occurs when cells in the chest proliferate, grow out of control, and form tumors. Chest cancer can occur anywhere in the body, but it is most common in the lungs, the colon, the breast, and the prostate.
The vast majority of cases of chest cancer (about 95%) are caused by two major types of cancer: tobacco-related cancers and non-tobacco-related cancers. About 5% of cases of chest cancer are caused by some other types of cancer.
Chest cancer is usually diagnosed when a person has symptoms, such as a change in the amount of air they breathe, a chest pain, difficulty breathing, or a Claudication.
The first step in treating chest cancer is to determine if the cancer is Stage I, Stage II, or Stage III.
If the cancer is Stage I, the treatments involved include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. If the cancer is Stage II, the treatments involved include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy. If the cancer is Stage III, the treatments involved include surgery, radiation therapy, and chemotherapy.
The types and combinations of treatments that a person receives will be based on their health condition, the size and location of the tumor, and the person's age and sex.
About 5% of people with chest cancer will die from the disease. About 50% of people with stage III cancer will die from the disease. About 75% of people with stage II cancer will die from the disease. About 95% of people with stage I cancer will survive.
