If you've made the decision to hand in your notice, here are some important steps that you need to take to ensure you're leaving the company on a good note!

1. Sign your new contract first

Before you place one foot out of the door, it's essential that you have finalised the details with your new employer.

This means that you should have a signed contract in place before you bid goodbye to your old job.

In addition, be sure that it's the right step that you want to take if there's any uncertainty, don't accept the new job just yet!

2. Hand in your notice personally

When it comes to resigning, the most important rule is to hand your notice in person.

Ask your manager for a private chat when it's convenient for them and tell them face-to-face.

It's essential that you don't tell anyone else you're leaving before your boss knows even if you're dying to tell your work bestie!

You don't want the possibility of your news circling the office before you've had a chance to talk to your manager.

3. Give feedback on why you're leaving

If you've been at the company for a while, your boss will want to know why you're leaving.

Prepare what you want to say beforehand to ensure that your answer is honest, yet professional.

Remember that you want to maintain a good relationship with your manager, so don't start slatting the company before you've even left it!

4. Write a formal letter of resignation

After you've discussed the details, it's time to write and send your formal resignation letter.

Start your letter by including the date and the recipient's name, then go on to state your resignation along with the date of your last working date.
The following paragraph should add a statement of gratitude, before you wrap-up with your next steps.

For example, any information on your handover. And finally, close with your signature.

5. Be at the top of your game

A lot of people tend to slack off as soon as they've handed in their notice since they have an attitude because they are leaving anyway.

That said, you should want to walk out of the door with a great reputation, and with a job well done.

6. Create a handover plan

Depending on your notice period, you're going to need to create a handover plan for your replacement.

Start by listing the job duties that you have, the tasks that you are working on and what you can tie up before your departure.

Make sure that all files are up-to-date and give your colleagues easy access in case they need to follow up on anything after you've left.

7. Share gratitude for the opportunity

No matter how long you've been with the company, it's important to show gratitude for the opportunity they have given you and the time that you have spent there.

You may also have developed strong bonds with your coworkers, so take the time to personally thank them for help and teamwork.

8. Make sure you say your goodbyes

Even if you're told to leave immediately (it can happen in certain sales roles), be sure to say your goodbyes and personally thank your supervisor for your time at the company.

You don't necessarily have to send out a mass email, but approach the people whom you'd like to stay in touch with.

So, there you have it! A few easy tips to follow when you're considering quitting your job.
