To help you conquer your nerves and ace your next interview, we’ll talk you through the essential steps that you need to follow to adequately prepare for your big day!

1. Practise

Many interviewees fail to prepare for their next interview by not practising their answers to common interview questions.

To ensure that you’re ready for the big day, run through a practice interview with a recruiter, you family or even by yourself in the mirror.

You can also record yourself and listen to your answers to identify areas that need improvement.

It’s essential to work on your communication to ensure that you use your limited interview time to prove that you’re a great fit for the role!

2. Do Your Research

Another major faux pas is when candidates fail to do their research on the company that they are interviewing for.

With information readily available at the click of a button, there really is no excuse for not knowing what the company does.

So, to prove that you are interested in this role, research the company, their projects and their culture before heading into the interview room.

3. Dress for the Part

Studies have shown that hiring managers make their decision within the first minute of the interview, which is usually before you’ve even had the chance to sit down and discuss your experience.

For this reason alone, dressing for interview success is very important.

That said, do some research on the company’s dress code and don’t go overboard if they tend to have a relaxed working environment.

If you’re in doubt, smart-casual attire is usually preferred.

4. Show Up on Time

This means arriving 10-15 minutes before your scheduled interview, which gives you time to use the restroom, read over your notes and catch your breath before you head into the interview room.

If you’re unsure of the location of your interview, do some research beforehand and do a test-run (if you can).

There’s nothing worse than turning up late and flustered because you got lost!

5. Emit Good Energy

Many interviewees feel so nervous that they fail to emit good energy during their interview.

Instead, they appear grumpy and disengaged because they are focusing on calming themselves down.

However, coming across as friendly, confident and observant is crucial.
You want to connect with the interviewer and show that you’re a great fit for the job.

You only have one shot, so make sure that it counts!

6. Demonstrate Your Value

Prove that you have what it takes to succeed in the position by preparing a few success stories.

When asked a question, don’t simply answer with a ‘yes’ or a ‘no’.

Instead, offer examples which show how you have successfully completed your duties in previous roles.

7. Show Enthusiasm

Prove how much you want the job by demonstrating enthusiasm and excitement.

This doesn’t mean that you should go over the top, but you could compliment the company on their work or past projects to show that you’ve been following the brand and admire what they do.

8. Don’t Forget to Smile

Many candidates are in such a frenzy that they forget to smile throughout their interview.

Don’t forget that an interview is a two-way conversation.

You need to understand the company’s values and also identify whether it’s somewhere where you would like to work.

So, don’t forget to enjoy the conversation and show your true personality.

9. Have Questions to Ask the Interviewer

Don’t forget to prepare your own questions for the interviewer to discover more about the position and the way the company operates.

So many interviewees fail to do so and end up leaving the room without having a clear understanding of the role.

Asking your own questions will show that you’re genuinely interested in the position and your success.

10. Follow Up on Your Interview

Once the interview is over, follow up within 24 hours to thank the hiring manager for their time.

If you have further material to send or feel like you didn’t answer a question well enough, you can also use this space to clarify your answers and boost your chances of getting the job.

With these tips, you should be able to adequately prepare for your next interview.
