The lost charm of tribal -- Paitkar painting

Paitkar painting is the folk art of jharkhand with a creative expression. This mode of painting recently gain popularity in the market. The Paitkar painting is also known as the scroll painting of jharkhand and it is cherish around west Bengal, Bihar, Odisha, and other nebouring state. 

History 

The Paitkar painting of jharkhand history can be traced back to the ethnicity and custom linked with west Bengal. The painting is associated with Hindu God and Goddesses in the Bengali region called Goddess manasa, the Goddess of Serpant. 

The village Amadubi  located in the eastern part of jharkhand is called the village of Paitkar. From ancient times the art form is the traditional form of the village. 

Characteristic 

On the whole Paitkar painting are cognates with Hindu epics. The tales from Ramayana, Mahabharata, Manasa pada, Kali pada. They also recount the deeds of God and Goddesses such as Shiva or Durga.

The Hindu mythology or local deities were the basic of Paitkar painting.

The Paitkar painting of jharkhand is also associated with even customs of holding Yajans and giving aim. The painting which belongs to the same group have similarities of what happens to human life after life, while scroll painting of Paitkar also mirrors the daily life of people living in the area. 

The Paitkar artists use to paint water based colors, which derived from nature. They uses only basic colors like Red, yellow  and blue from nature.

Technique

 Paitkar artists uses specific leaves, colored stone and soil to prepare color. The soil and colored stones are available by the riverside. But acquiring them are exhausted process. While a paste are made from grinding fruits and leafs. After taking the liquid part and pouring certain amount of water and boil the liquid and filter the concoction and boiling process is done again to thicken the liquid.

This process is also for the stone base color. 

Now, to make the color permanent natural gum extracted from Bel (wood apple)  fruits and resin of been tree. The black color is made from the carbon residue of Kerosene  lamp or clinker and this is mixed with water and natural gum. 

Now the color is ready to be painted on canvas, wall artifacts and fabric.

Innovation 

The products like frocks, dress, stares, decorative items, jewelry, shirts and much more is introduce by the artisan of jharkhand. Mainly the painting is done which reflects day-to-day human life, legends and mythology of society of tribal culture. 

Present day scenario 

The people of jharkhand tribe were not able to spread the name of their art broadly. Specifically, the Paitkar painting of jharkhand might suffer major set back and it may transfer into extinct art in future. But, the local government, is now stressing to develop the art form. 

Despite government’s endeavourment  to declare the village for rural tourism in collaboration with jharcraft and jharkhand tourism development , the problems have developed. 

The industry department ensure to sell the product and to open a Gurukul. But, it’s not functioning thus the worker have to visit every house door to sell their product ranging for 300rs – 3000rs. 

As of now, painters lack shelter to carry out their work. In facts, the plans have been taken to rope in the Paitkar painter is yet to be taken by jharkhand institute crafts, design and entrepreneurship in collaboration with NID and tourism department is in charge of their ongoing activities. 

Find no way to continue the tradition, few painters of this village are training their children. The reason is to allow the art to breath, forcing them to choose painters instead of fulfilling their dreams. All of the above are trying to preserved the art in a continuous process.
